In the issue:

M5 CS celebration
Is the CS version of the F90 M5 BMW’s greatest super saloon? Is it the world’s greatest super saloon? To find out, we’ve taken the M5 CS on a roadtrip, spoken to the boss of M, Frank van Meel, to see what the essential ingredients are for a Competition Sport model. We’ve also pitted it against some rivals from the same stable. Firstly, the CS takes on many people’s favourite M5, the E39. The M5 CS then takes on another of the CS programme's successes, one in a more conventional road racer package, the F87 M2 CS.

BMWs of Tenerife
There’s more to Tenerife than all-you-can-eat buffets and bottomless cocktails, a lot more for those who love BMWs. The island has miles of smooth tarmac, countless beautiful vistas and all-year-round sun to create driving heaven, plus a burgeoning community of BMW fans.

Evolution 2 Motorsport
South African motorsport in the Eighties was fascinating. The racing was close, the personalities were big and then there were the cars, so many homologation specials. BMW of South Africa created some exceptional machines, but it was motorsport mechanics and engineers like Alec Ceprnich that helped galvanise their reputation with race and championship wins. Alec now restores and looks after the racecars he helped put on the map.

318is Class II
There are two words guaranteed to make any car enthusiast swoon: homologation special. To help its E36 saloon shine in the Super Touring era, BMW created a road car with some special aero. Enter the 318is Class II. It might not be blessed with a motorsport-derived engine or trick competition chassis parts, but there’s still lots to love about this Nineties saloon, as we find out.

Timeline: BMW’s diesel engines
It may not see much fondness these days, but diesel was once the fuel loved by manufacturers, consumers and policy makers. In many ways, that’s thanks to BMW when it started creating refined, swift and desirable diesel cars. Its commitment to diesel saw it start a trend in motorsport, create cutting-edge technology, become obsessed with adding turbos and making some of the most incredible diesel engines to be fitted to a road car.
